Your Backyard Tree Can Become Furniture
The walnut that came down in the storm. The maple removed for a new addition. Most homeowners watch these go to the chipper. That is a waste of good wood. We take the log, mill it into thick slabs, and stack it for drying. The grain, the shape, the story: all of it stays yours. Years later it is a dining table where your family eats. Not a mulch pile. We handle the whole path from log on the ground to finished slab.
What Makes a Log Worth Milling
Not every yard tree qualifies. We look at length, straightness, and diameter. A log needs roughly eight feet of usable trunk and enough width for a solid slab. Metal, nails, fence wire, and old hardware hidden in the trunk can damage blades, so we check first. Sound wood with no major rot mills best. Some character cracks and voids are fine. Those become epoxy fills or natural edges. Bring us the tree or send photos. We tell you straight whether it is worth cutting.
Drying: The Step Homeowners Skip at Their Own Risk
Fresh-cut lumber cannot be built into furniture. Wet wood moves, cracks, and warps. Slabs need to air dry slowly, roughly one year per inch of thickness, or finish in a kiln to speed things up. We guide the process end to end. Once the moisture content is right, the slab is ready for flattening, finishing, and a build. For a homeowner, the timeline matters. Plan on patience, and plan on a finished piece that lasts generations, not seasons.
From Slab to Finished Piece
A milled slab is potential. The finished piece is the point. Some homeowners want us to handle everything: flattening, epoxy if needed, metal legs, final finish. Others want the slab only, to build on their own. Either way works. We also help with wood selection if you are choosing between your own slab and one from our inventory. Visit the shop in Cincinnati during open hours, Tuesday through Thursday afternoons or Saturday mornings, and look at the wood in person.

Tree Salvage Milling for Homeowners in Cincinnati FAQs
Can my fallen yard tree really become a table?
Often, yes. The trunk needs to be sound, straight enough, and long enough to yield usable slabs. Species matters too: walnut, oak, maple, and cherry mill beautifully. Remove the tree, keep the trunk sections, and bring us photos or the log itself. We assess it honestly and tell you what it can become before any cutting starts.
How long does the whole process take?
Expect months, not days. Milling happens quickly once the log reaches us. Drying is the long part, since thick slabs need roughly a year of air drying per inch of thickness, or less with kiln drying. After that, flattening and building a finished piece take additional weeks. Start now and the table arrives when the wood is truly ready.
What should I do with the tree before bringing it to you?
Leave the trunk as long and clean as possible. Do not cut it into firewood lengths. Skip the chainsaw carving. Keep branches off the main trunk sections and note any nails, wire, or hardware that may be embedded. Longer, straighter logs yield better slabs. Call or stop by and we will walk you through what to keep.
Do you mill small branches or just large trunks?
Large trunks are where slab milling shines. Branches and short sections rarely hold enough width or length for a table, though some can work for smaller projects like shelves or accents. If your log is too small to mill, we will say so and show you slab options from our inventory instead of wasting your time.
