Common questions and tips from our work with Cincinnati customers.
How does picking a slab at the shop work?
You walk the rack. Slabs are stacked by species, so you can pull boards, sight down the edges, and compare grain side by side. We talk through what you are building, check moisture status with you, and measure anything you want confirmed. Most visits run under an hour. If the slab needs flattening or a finish, we set that up before you leave.
How long until my slab is ready to use?
It depends on the slab, not a fixed clock. Kiln-dried stock is ready for your project the day you take it home. Air-dried or rough slabs may need flattening first, which is a separate service and usually a short turnaround. A finished tabletop or countertop cut, flattened, and topcoated typically takes days to a couple of weeks, not months. We tell you the honest timeline before any work starts.
How do I know a slab is dry enough?
Moisture content is the number that matters. Wood meant for interior furniture in the Cincinnati area should sit around 6 to 8 percent moisture content, which matches typical indoor humidity. Kiln-dried slabs are dried to that range on purpose. Air-dried slabs vary, and a rough board that feels dry on the surface can still be wet in the core. We check and tell you where each slab stands.
Measure your space before you browse
Slabs sell by their character, but they have to fit the room. Measure the spot where the piece will sit, plus doorways and hallways on the path in. Note whether you want overhang for seating. Bring the numbers. We will pull slabs in the right length and width range so you are not guessing in the shop.
Read the grain from both ends
A slab looks different standing in the rack than it will across a room. Sight down the length from both ends to spot twist, cup, or a crack hiding in the middle. Check the bark side and the heart side. Live edges are part of the deal, but loose bark and voids are worth knowing about before you commit, not after.
